The 2026 Burns Night celebration at Old Dalby Village Hall was a knockout success!
The evening began with George Law leading the Selkirk Grace and Duncan Bennett’s Address to the Haggis, both resplendent in their highland attire. A quiz had been prepared and was completed by the diners as they tucked in to their traditional haggis, neeps and tatties, followed by whisky trifle or cranachan, all beautifully prepared and served by committee members, their spouses and volunteers. After the lovely meal, Shanti Patman recited a Burns poem before Jenny Redel revealed the answers, exposing the general ignorance of many to the Scottish and Rabbie-related quiz.
Jim Patman then paid tribute to the village’s own Jock Hargreaves and there was an irreverent rendition of one of Jock’s favourite songs: “Oh ye cannae push your granny of the bus!” Nigel, Jenny, Russ and Penny continued the music theme, leading a boisterous sing-along of Scottish songs. This was followed by Tim Heywood’s thoughtful and engaging performance of three more Scottish folk songs accompaning on accordion. Philippa then instructed an enthusiastic selection of volunteer residents in “The Gay Gordons”, “The Dashing White Sergeant” and “Strip the Willow”. The survivors completed the friendly, fun night with Auld Lang Syne and somewhat zealous dad disco dancing.
What a wonderful evening, the smiling, happy and well-fed faces being a fitting tribute to the thought and effort put into the night by so many people. Planning for next year already!
